I know that its been a while since this book came into stands.I also  understand that its been more than a decade that it won a booker prize.What I can’t understand is why it took me so long to read this.The story is about the fraternal twins,Rahel and Estha whose emotional connection to one another is stronger than that of most siblings.This sad story not only centers around the twins,but their mother Ammu, their Baba,their uncle Chacko,their grandparents Mammachi and Pappachi,their little grand aunt Baby Kochamma,their beloved ‘untouchable Velutha’,chacko’s ex-wife Margret kochamma,her ‘child-sized coffin’ daughter Sophie mol,Kochumaria,their ancestors,about history,colonialism,communist party,superstitions,injustice,violence and trauma.It is very difficult to summarize the whole story,and to be honest I don’t think I can do justice to the book even if I try..

I think I liked her knowledge in English more than the content of the book because this is ‘A sad story,told very hilariously,very tenderly and very  craftily.’One thing I noticed about this story is that there are no lead characters in this huge story.Also no one is blamed directly at any instance.Every character is well described and explained that at times you are confused as to, with who to  empathaise more.When they are sad you cant help but feel sad for them. When they are happy, you cant avoid a smile.Even though this is a dazzling masterpiece of language,when she describes about Estha-’Estha had always been a quiet child,so no one could pinpoint with any degree of accuracy exactly when(the year,if not the month or day) he had stopped talking.Stopped talking altogether, that is.Estha occupied very little space in the world.’,this wet my eyes. At times she was also very poetic in her language.Some of her descriptions striked me.Like when she described Ammu’s looks-”Ammu’s looks said,Never mind her as long as you have done the right thing“Ammu’s beautiful mouth,that trying-not-to-cry mouth“,all were awesome!!!.As we turn those pages,we can see the chapters alternate between the past and present,23 years apart,we will also realize that the love of a brother and a sister cannot be explained in a much better way.

“In those early amorphous years when memory had only just begun, when life was full of Beginnings and no Ends, and Everything was Forever, Esthappen and Rahel thought of themselves together as Me, and separately, individually, as We or Us. As though they were a rare breed of Siamese twins, physically separate, but with joint identities.

Now, these years later, Rahel has a memory of waking up one night giggling at Estha’s funny dream.

She has other memories too that she has no right to have.

She remembers, for instance (though she hadn’t been there), what the Orangedrink Lemondrink Man did to Estha in Abhilash Talkies. She remembers the taste of the tomato sandwiches–Estha’s sandwiches, that Estha ate–on the Madras Mail to Madras.

And these are only the small things.”

The other touching instance in this story is Ammu’s funeral.There was no one from the family attending other than Chacko and Rahel.(Of course,Estha was not there at that time).At her funeral Rahel felt like Ammu was given to a beast.Her smile,her voice,the way she cuddled her babies before putting them to bed,her goodnight kiss,the way she parted and combed their hair with one another,the way she held knickers out for Rahel to climb into,”left leg,right leg”,everything was given to the beast.Rahel’s Ammu was gone!!!There were no tears.But it made the reader cry….Also,when she was asked to write to Estha,she thinks,”how can someone write letters to a part of themself??To their feet or hair or Heart????”

Talking about the end of the story,whats so interesting is that,even though it’s the end of the book, it’s not actually the end of the story. In fact, the end of the book places us at the beginning of things, so to speak.In a nut shell-its a well written,moving and beautiful story..

Midnight musings are the best. It’s just plain amazing what the lack of light and sound     around you can do to the sheer pace and clarity of your otherwise frequently interrupted thinking process. Definitely makes me wonder if the deaf and the blind and the differently abled have a much clearer view of their world than we do of ours.

Now, one of the many things I hate about New Years is that it makes me look back  and reflect. This is also, incidentally, one of the many things I love about New Years. Every New Years, I have a tendency to surprise myself. I think about myself and how I was on the 1st of January. And then, I think about myself and how I am on the 31st of December. It’s amazing what 365 days of living can do to you!! You realise everything is different. Your life, the place you live, your family, your friends, relationships, your priorities, the way you talk, the way you dress, even the way you perceive the world around you. It’s like you get a whole new identity every year. Is that a good thing? To find yourself different each year? To realise that your definition of ‘me’ doesn’t seem so accurate anymore? But then again, isn’t change the only constant? It certainly can’t be wrong to learn from your experiences.

In the course of a year, there could have been a hundred people you met and who made an impact, however insignificant, on your life and the way you see it. Some of them, you held onto. Some of them, you had to let go. Each new day is a learning experience. Even the worst of days teach you the best of lessons. The same goes with all kinds of relationships. Where is the room for bitter feelings then? It is only natural that you learn from all the things you did and saw, right or wrong, and use it to change yourself in the way you see best. You, probably, won’t even notice it happening until one fine New Years, you decide to turn and look back. Now, can something that alters you in some way without your knowing, be called change? Is there room for guilt and regret? Or for that matter, celebration? And so, I prefer calling it ‘evolution’. You can’t help it. It’s natural and you just have to accept the fact that it has happened. Now, look back and try to remember. Those small, seemingly insignificant moments in that one year that seemed to add meaning to your life then, the relationships you built, the ones that grew stronger, the ones that broke, the people you met, the choices you made and all the hard thinking that went into them. Everything. Now the moment you start regretting who you have become, you are, in essence, also regretting all of the above. Now, that’s a sad waste of a year.

So yes. I’ve changed. And I’m not going to regret it. Maybe I’ve changed for the worse. But there’s always room for correction and I’ll try because nothing in the world is ever that bad. But life’s too short for regrets. And that’s what came out of my latest midnight musing.  :)

Now let’s compare. Consider glass with water as your problems. As long as you hold it i.e, when you think about the same problem over again, it pains you, it hurts you.

So, let problems come.  Do not worry too much about it. Keep the mind free from problems. Difficulties teach us a lot. It depends on our attitude as how we take it. So from now on,

അഴിമതിക്കെതിരെ പറയുന്ന ഈ യോഗിക്ക് വലിയ തുകയുടെ ആസ്തി ഇല്ലേ ?
നിരാഹാരം കെടക്കാന്‍ പോണ പന്തലും അതിന്റെ ആര്‍ഭാടം നിറഞ്ഞതല്ലേ ?
ഇവയെക്കുരിച്ച്ചുള്ള എന്റെ നിരീക്ഷണങ്ങള്‍ പങ്കുവയ്ക്കട്ടെ
ഒരാള്‍ യോഗ ഗുരുവായാലും സന്യാസിയായാലും അയാള്‍ രാജ്യത്തെ പൌരന്‍ ആണ് ആ നിലക്ക് രാജ്യത്തെ ബാധിക്കുന്ന ഇതു പ്രശ്നത്തിലും ഇടപെടാന്‍ അയാള്‍ക്ക്‌ അവകാശം ഉണ്ട്.
കൂടാതെ ഒരു ജന വിഭാഗത്തെ മുഴുവന്‍ അഴിമതിക്കെതിരെ അണിനിരത്തി സമ്മര്‍ദത്തിലൂടെ സര്‍ക്കാരിനെ കൊണ്ട് ഈ മഹത്തായ ആവശ്യം നേടിയെടുക്കാനുള്ള കഴിവുള്ള ആള്‍ എന്ന നിലയില്‍ അത് അത്യാവശ്യവും ആണ്.
പിന്നെ അദ്ദേഹത്തിന്റെ ആസ്തി അത് നേരായ വഴിയില്‍ സമ്പാദിച്ചതാണോ, അത് തെറ്റായ രീതിയില്‍ (ഉദാ : രാജ്യദ്രോഹം) ചിലവോഴിക്കുന്നുണ്ടോ എന്നും എന്ന് മാത്രം നോക്കിയാ മതി.
പിന്നെ ആയിരക്കണക്കിന് പേര്‍ പങ്കെടുക്കുന്ന പന്തലിന്റെ നീളവും വീതിയും കൂടുതലാണെന്നും പറയുന്നതിലും, ഡല്‍ഹിയിലെ കൊടും ചൂടില്‍ (40 ഡിഗ്രീ) കൂളറുകളും ഫാനും വച്ചത് ആഡംബരം ആണ് എന്ന് പറയുന്നതിലും എന്ത് ഓചിത്യമാണുള്ളത് എന്നും ചിന്തിച്ചു നൊക്കു. ഇനി ഇത്തിരി പൊടിച്ചാലും 400 ലക്ഷം കോടി എന്ന വലിയ ഒരു തുക രാജ്യത്തിലേക്ക് എത്തിക്കാനല്ലേ ?
ഞങ്ങള്‍ ഭയക്കുന്നില്ലാ ഭയക്കുന്നില്ലാ എന്ന് അലറിക്കൊണ്ട്‌ ദിഗ്വിജയ് അടക്കമുള്ള നേതാക്കന്‍മാര്‍ പരസ്പര ബന്ധമില്ലാതെ എന്തൊക്കയോ പിറുപിറുക്കുകയാണ് .

യോഗാ രാംദേവ് സൌജന്യമായി യോഗ പഠിപ്പിക്കുന്നു എന്നുള്ളത് മറച്ചു വക്കുകയും പതഞ്‌ജലി യോഗ ട്രസ്റ്റിന്റെ
അഗത്വം എടുക്കുമ്പോള്‍ നല്‍കേണ്ട സംഭാവനകളെ ഉയര്‍ത്തിക്കാട്ടി പണം വാങ്ങി മാത്രം യോഗ പഠിപ്പിക്കുന്നു എന്ന് പ്രചരിപ്പിക്കുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു .തങ്ങളുടെ അഴിമതിയും കഴിവ് കേടിനെയും മറക്കാന്‍ തങ്ങളാല്‍ ആവുന്നതെല്ലാം ചെയ്യുകയാണ് കോണ്ഗ്രസ് .
വാല്‍ക്കഷ്ണം: ഇവിടെ ഞങ്ങള്‍ എന്ത് വേണമെങ്കിലും ചെയ്യും ഭീകര വാദിയായ ബിന്‍ ലാദനെ ഞങ്ങള്‍ ലാദന്‍ ജി എന്ന് വിളിക്കും, അഫ്സല്‍ ഗുരുവിനും അജ്മല്‍ കസബിനും നല്ല കോയി ബിരിയാണി വച്ചു കൊടുക്കും, പാക്കിസ്തനീന്നും ബംഗ്ലാടെശീന്നും ഉള്ള നുഴഞ്ഞു കേറ്റക്കാര്‍ക്ക് ഞങ്ങള്‍ Id കാര്‍ഡും പാന്‍ കാര്‍ഡും കൊടുക്കും ,കൊടികളും ,ശതകോടികളും അഴിമതി നടത്തും , അതൊക്കെ ധൈര്യത്തില്‍ ചോദിക്കാന്‍ പ്രതിപക്ഷം പോലും മടിക്കുമ്പോള്‍. ഞങ്ങളെ വെല്ലു വിളിക്കാന്‍ ഒരു ബാബാ രാംദേവോ

• What is the relevance of analyzing the glorious and struggle some past of our country?
• Did those revolutionary changes bring forth welfare to all common people in our country?
• Has the growth and development of the society become Unilateral?
• How did the wealth accumulation of free India Benefited a minority of the people?
• How did majority of the people are deprived of the basic needs?

The independent India after half a century sees the cry of crores of children with malnutrition. 25% of children have been devoid of primary education. 10% children die every year due to epidemics. 30% women are illiterates and gender equality of women propagated by our social leaders has become legal mirage. Human right violations upon the marginalized and oppressed people increase day by day. The frustrated and educated unemployed Youth turn to terrorist activities. Theological Fanaticism and communalism segregated the common people.

Do we have to inculcate the diversity and divergence in terms of the above disparities in our society?
As an engineering student who is supposed to be the architect of the society do believe that we have to rebuild a society with the creativity of the majority of the people in our country.

എട്ടു പതിറ്റാണ്ടുകള്‍ കഴിഞ്ഞു പോയിരിക്കുന്നു അതിനുള്ളില്‍ എത്രയോ വസന്തങ്ങളും ശിശിര ഹേമന്തങ്ങളും കൊഴിഞ്ഞു പോയിരിക്കുന്നു എങ്കിലും ഓരോ ഭാരതീയന്റെയും ഉള്ളില്‍ ഭഗത് ഒരു ഉണര്‍വുള്ള ഓര്‍മയായി അവശേഷിക്കുന്നു .
തൂക്കുകയറിനുമുന്പില്‍ ചെറു പുഞ്ചിരിയോടെ നിന്ന ആ മൂന്നു ധീരന്മാര്‍ ഭാരതയുവത്വത്ത്തിന്റെ മഹത്വം ലോക ചരിത്രത്തില്‍ തുന്നിപിടിപ്പിക്കുകയായിരുന്നു .
പടക്കളത്തില്‍ തളര്‍ന്നുവീണ അര്‍ജുനനോടു ” ഉത്തിഷ്ഠ കൌന്തയാ യുദ്ധായ കൃത നിശ്ചയാ ” എന്ന് പറഞ്ഞ കേശവ വാണി ഭാരതതീയന്റെ മനസ്സില്‍ നിന്നും താമസ്കരിക്കപ്പെട്ടപ്പോള്‍ , ഭാരതം മുഴുവന്‍ ഘോര തമസ്സില്‍ ആഴ്ന്നുറങ്ങിയപ്പോള്‍. വിശാല വീക്ഷണത്തിന്റെയും സര്‍വ ധര്‍മ സമഭാവനയുടെയും മണ്ണ് നൂറ്റാണ്ടുകളുടെ അടിമത്തത്തില്‍ വീണു.
എന്നാല്‍ വീരമാതാ എന്നു പുകള്‍പെറ്റ ഭാരതാംബ അവിടയും ഒരു പിടി വീര പുത്രര്‍ക്ക് ജന്മം നല്‍കി. ശിവാജിയുടെയും, റാണാ പ്രതാപന്റെയും ഒക്കെ വീര ചരിതങ്ങള്‍ അവര്‍ക്ക് പ്രചോതനം ആയി ,
പ്രതികരിക്കാന്‍ അറിയാത്ത ഒരു സമൂഹമായി ഭാരതത്തെ അധപ്പതിപ്പിക്കാന്‍ അവര്‍ അനുവദിച്ചില്ല.

സിംഹാരൂഡയായ ശ്രീ ദുര്‍ഗയെപ്പോലെ ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് സാമ്രാജ്യത്തിനു നേരെ കുതിച്ചു ചാടിയ റാണി ലക്ഷ്മീ ബായിയും , “നിങ്ങളിനിക്ക് രക്തം തരൂ ഞാന്‍ നിങ്ങള്ക്ക് സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യം തരാം” എന്നു പറഞ്ഞ നേതാജിയും , “ഞാന്‍ സ്വതന്ത്രന്‍” എന്നു ഉറക്കെ വിളിച്ചു പറഞ്ഞ ചന്ദ്രശേഖര്‍ ആസാദും ,കേരള സിംഹമായ വീര പഴശ്ശി തമ്പുരാനും,വീര സവര്‍ക്കറും,ഭഗത് സിങ്ങും, ഓരോ ഭാരതീയന്റെ മനസ്സിലും പ്രോജ്വലിക്കുന്നു .ഇവരുടെ നാമങ്ങള്‍ പോലും ഭാരതീയന്റെ ഹൃദയങ്ങളെ പുളകം കൊള്ളിക്കുന്നു ,
സൂര്യനസ്തമിക്കാത്ത ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് സാമ്രാജ്യത്തെ മുള്‍മുനയില്‍ നിര്‍ത്താന്‍ ഓരോ സായുധ ഭടന്മാരും നയിച്ച യുദ്ധങ്ങള്‍ക്ക് കഴിഞ്ഞു .
യുവത്വം എല്ലാ അര്‍ത്ഥത്തിലും മനുഷ്യ ജീവിതത്തിലെ സുപ്രധാന കാലഘട്ടമാണ് അവിടെ ബാല ചാപല്യങ്ങലോ വൃദ്ധന്റെ ജഡഭാവമോ ശോഭിക്കുകയില്ല . ആ യുവത്വം സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യ ഭാരതം എന്ന മഹാസങ്കല്പത്തിനായി സസന്തോഷം ബലി അര്‍പ്പിച്ച ഭഗത് സിംഹന്മാര്‍ ,അവരുടെ സ്വാര്‍ത്ഥ ലക്ഷ്യങ്ങളെ പൂര്‍ണമായും മറന്നു കളഞ്ഞു .കൊലക്കയറിനു മുന്‍പില്‍ നില്‍ക്കുമ്പോള്‍ ആ മുഖങ്ങളില്‍ ഭയമോ ,വിഷമമോ എന്തിനു അവ്യക്തമായ നിര്‍വികാരതയോ അല്ല ഉണ്ടായിരുന്നത് ചുറ്റും നിന്ന ബ്രിട്ടീഷ് പോലീസ്കാരെക്കൂടി അല്‍പ നേരത്തേക്കെങ്കിലും ഭാരത ഭക്തരാക്കി മാറ്റിയ ധീരമായ പുഞ്ചിരിയായിരുന്നു .ഭഗത് സിംഗ്, രാജ് ഗുരു, സുഖ് ദേവ് ആ നാമങ്ങള്‍ ഭാരതീയന്റെ നെഞ്ചില്‍ ചിരപ്രതിഷ്ഠ നേടി. ഒരിക്കല്‍ കൂടി ഭാരതാംബ തന്റെ പുത്രരെ ഓര്‍ത്ത് ആനന്ദ ബാഷ്പം അണിയുകയായിരുന്നു.

ഈ വീര സിംഹങ്ങള്‍ നമുക്ക് പ്രചോതനം ആകട്ടെ എന്ത് കണ്ടാലും പ്രതികരിക്കാത്ത ജഡസത്വങ്ങളായി നമുക്ക് മാറാതിരിക്കാം. ഭഗത് സിംഹന്റെ 80 ആം ബലിദാന ദിനത്തില്‍ . നമ്മുടെ ശിരസ്സുകള്‍ ഒരിക്കലുംപരടെഷികളുടെ മുന്‍പില്‍ താഴരുതെന്നാഗ്രഹിച്ച്ച്ച ആ മഹാ ജ്യോതിസ്സുകല്‍ക്കുമുന്പില്‍ നമ്മുടെ ശിരസ്സുകള്‍ കുനിക്കാം .
